ZED Camera Suitability for High-Accuracy 3D Measurement of Metallic Parts

Hi all,

We’re exploring camera options for accurate 3D depth measurement of metallic components. Our preliminary specs:

  • Target accuracy: ~0.1 mm

  • Working distance: 0.8 m – 1.5 m

  • Min FOV: 800 × 600 mm @ 0.8 m

Can a ZED camera meet these requirements? Any recommended model/configuration or known limitations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi @ramshan
Welcome to the Stereolabs community.

The theoretical accuracy of a ZED X Mini with 4 mm focal length optics is about 1% at 1.5 m.
This means that the theoretical precision of the depth estimation is about +/- 0.015 at 1.5m and +/- 0.008 m at 0.8 m.

Hi @Myzhar

Thank you for your reply.

Just to clarify the units you mentioned for depth estimation precision:
You stated a precision of ±0.015 at 1.5 m and ±0.008 at 0.8 m. I assume these values are in meters, which would correspond to approximately ±15 mm at 1.5 m and ±8 mm at 0.8 m.

If this understanding is correct, the achievable precision is significantly larger than our target accuracy of ~0.1 mm. Could you please confirm whether the precision values are indeed in meters, and whether there are any configurations, calibration approaches, or alternative ZED models that could improve accuracy to the sub-millimetre range?

Thank you for the clarification.

Yes, this is correct.

Currently, we do not have products that can reach the required precision at the range you indicated.

@ramshan You might want to check out dedicated 3D scanning cameras, for example the 3DMakerPro Moose scanner I believe meets your requirements, depending on your surface finish.

@Myzhar Thank you for confirming the accuracy unit.
Noted. We will look into other possible solutions.
