Extending GMSL2 cables to 30m for ZED X One S Cameras

Hello,

I am working on a project where I need to connect two ZED X One S cameras to a single ZED Box Mini located roughly 30m away. The cable path is a separate conduit run per camera.

I have PoE+ Ethernet available at the camera mounting location. Given that it looks like the GMSL2 cables max out at 15m, I have the following questions:

1. Is there any configuration (lower frame rate/resolution) where a 30m GMSL2 run (using extensions and couplers) is supported?
2. Do you recommend a specific GMSL2-to-Ethernet or GMSL2-to-Fiber conversion kit that is compatible with the ZED X One S and ZED Box Mini?
3. Since I have PoE at the camera site, can that be utilized at all?

I want to avoid placing the ZED Box Mini in an inaccessible location, so finding a reliable long-range link for the cameras is my priority.

Alec

Hi @AlecMulder
Welcome to the StereoLabs community.

No, the maximum length for a GMSL2 cable is always 15 m.

The only recommended solution is using the ZED Local Streaming module to send data over an Ethernet cable: Local Video Streaming - Stereolabs

Hi @salasidis,

As we have not tested such a solution internally, we cannot recommend it.

Thank you for the replies! My main concern with having local streamers is both the additional equipment cost and the reliability of the system due to increasing the number of devices that have to make it through a unix boot process increasing from one in an accessible location to three, two being in nearly inaccessible locations and in a much hotter environment.

Is there a device I could use there that I could trust for 10+ years? In a perfect world it would be passively cooled, PoE input and IP50 or better. This is an outdoor public art installation that requires low / no maintenance.
